George, the reasons you articulate in your last paragraph are exactly 
why I jump on the Monochrom as my first "real" digital camera (only had 
a $100.00 p & s prior).

Knowing that the output is b & w only, just like in the film days, gets 
one much more in tune with the quality of light and shape that makes a 
good b & w image.

Although when I just take the MM out, I am sometimes accused of the "if 
all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" syndrome, I feel 
that it's better to catch an image in b & w that maybe should have been 
in color than not catch it at all.
