Very interesting and just what the LUG is all about. I asked for constructive C&C and I got exactly what I asked for. I'd be fascinated to hear in more detail from anyone who wants to give more detail, why they feel what they do So here is a bit more of what happened from my perspective. I was sitting in a caf? on the edge of the market and saw this. I really didn't like the saturated colours of the grasses and flowers but the overall structure appealed to me. I suppose that I previsualised it in B&W. I wanted to convey the heat of the day (it was 43C in the sun) and the light, as well as the structure. I would have liked the stall holder and his clients to be nearer, but that wasn't going to happen if I wanted the flowers in the foreground. The biggest problem in processing was the harsh light on the Church (contributed to in large part by the Marquis de Sade's ancestors), which I didn't want to swamp everything, combined with the distribution of the deep shadows in the middle ground and the light on the foreground flowers. I do shoot for colour but I prefer more muted tones. I have some examples from the same day which I will post later. Why in B&W? I just find it a more natural medium to work in. It often makes it difficult to get the shots that you want; but as I said earlier I don't like things to look too much like a postcard. In that part of the world all the cards are swamped with saturated colours which definitely aren't the colours of Provence. Ted: - perhaps this explains a bit more of what was going through my head. Douglas: - surely flowers do have souls ;-) even when they have been dyed livid red or yellow! Jim - I see what you are trying to get at, but for me it doesn't quite work...the church really isn't that colour but I do prefer the more muted tones. I used ColourEfex for the B&W conversion and PSE 12 for most of the rest of the work. Lluis - many thanks, but I really do prefer the B&W. What do you mean by "usual"? The more obvious way to shoot it? All: - as an after thought I did wonder at the time what the LUG would think and who would shoot it which way :-) :-) Regards, Peter On 09/08/2016 00:19, Ted Grant wrote: > Hi Peter, > You know my quote about B&W, colour and peoples clothes? :-) > Every once in awhile on the LUG I see a shot the complete opposite of the > quotation. > In your photo here I'd have shot that in colour as the subject appeared to > pertain more to a "market flower situation???" rather than people & > clothes? > By the same token we shoot our photos on the bases of "Too each his own > feelings."
