Around 7500 trees have been uprooted around the city, so that our ample green cover resembles a half-rotting green carpet at present. No complaints, though, as the rain was sorely required for the city's reservoirs - even with this deluge, we are still 50% short of our normal annual precipitation. The funny thing was that 24 hours before the hurricane, with windspeeds touching 120 kmph, made landfall, I, together with a couple of friends, were peacefully photographing birds at the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary, in the shadow of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (Sriharikote High Altitude Range), our space rocket launching station, barely 15-20 km from where the hurricane crossed the coast - so you could say that these were taken in the shadow of a hurricane.. It was a cool, lightly overcast morning, so we kept photographing till almost 11 am before returning to our homes, a couple of hours back by road. The light was a bit dull early on, making for good minimalist photographs, before brightening up very evenly, perfect for colour later on. The water level in the lake was alarmingly low, as can be most clearly seen in the photograph entitled "Conversation", with vast dry areas, so the deluge should have done some good there as well.
