I was with you until the "Subway, McDonalds, and Kentucky Fried Chicken"
line. Too bad. My sister-in-law is from St. Petersburg and she has
stories.

I was in Russia at the same time of year in 1989 and everything was dark,
gloomy, and depressing. People were standing on the street selling their
household goods to buy food. There were long lines at bakeries to buy
bread before it ran out. The GUM department store had mostly empty shelves
and you had to stand in line to order a number from the shelf, go to
another line to pay and get a receipt, go back to the first line and get
your item. Now the GUM is the fanciest, most expensive mall you have ever
seen with skylights and bright, colorful chain stores from the USA and
Europe, first-class restaurants with excellent food and no shortage of
bread. St. Petersburg is a beautiful city with canals and wonderful
historic sites and Subway, McDonalds, and Kentucky Fried Chicken.
