How about those very expensive R-Series Leicas?

Aren't the bodies just third-generation rehashes of the Minolta XE family
of the mid-70s? Are they really as durable as the modern high-end
Japanese SLRs?

What about the lenses... Leica M design has always emphasized edge
sharpness and contrast over raw resolution. Does the R series follow
this design center? How do they compare with the Japanese SLR lenses?
For that matter, how do they compare with the (presumably) German-designed
Zeiss lenses used in the Japanese-made modern-day Contax cameras?

I've always been curious about the R-series, but have never known anyone
that actually uses it.
