I find them quite handy for scale focusing. With practice, one can use the index finger to push and pull the focusing ring to focus to the proper distance without even looking at the scale or looking through the viewfinder. << Both my 28 and 50 have thumb indents which serve the same purpose for me, without a mechanical lock.
