It allows you to use your lens head on a SOMKY, a bellows, a Focuslide and
probably a gazillion other items.

These things are made to be removed. It will not harm the focus mechanism;
just be sure to not mix up the heads and focusing mounts with someone
elses. I believe the focus mechanisms are adjusted individually for each
lens.
