Subject: MR-9 battery converter

received my MR-9 battery converter this weekend, and given the discussion
on the list about replacements for Mercury Oxide batteries (PX 625) I
thought a preliminary report would be worthwhile.

The converter is the size of a PX 625 and takes a smaller S76 silver battery
(about $3.60). While I cannot judge the electronics, the case appears well
made and finished. It fit into my Leica Meter and while I have not as yet
shot a role of film with it, the meter responded as it should to the battery
test level (centered on the "dot." A few test exposures comparing the PX
625 and the converter with the S76 resulted in identical readings.

Assuming that durability is not an issue, this would appear to be one
solution to the problem posed by the faze out of Mercury Oxide batteries.
Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a way to replicate the "off-on"
characteristic of mercury oxide; as I understand it, the silver oxide
batteries fade more slowly and will have to be replaced regularly.

My apologies to those of you on both the Rollei and Leica lists, but I
assumed that there would be interest on both in this device.
