I have used two types of "rings" over the years and at no time are the rear
elements exposed after removing one of the lenses.

There is an adapter made by Leica to mount two lenses back to back, they are
grey in colour and are the same as rear lens caps, except they are all in one
piece.

If you wish to use epoxy and glue two rear element caps to-gether you
immediately have a stacking adapter for two lenses.

I have made them to lock an M lens to an R lens and when you have a deep set
rear element like the 28mm M you just use that cap (or a spare) and there are no
problems.

They work very well and if you fasten them to-gether properly they'll last for
years.
