The mounts of the lenses have a raised section which has a slightly larger diameter than the throat of the SL2 body. This prevents the lens from seating flush with the bayonet ring on the camera body. On the R8 (not sure about the other Rs) the bayonet ring has a step machined out to accept the raised section on the ROM lens mount. The SL2 uses twin cam lenses. The bottom cam operates the exposure meter and the top cam the viewfinder aperture display. The lever actuated by the top cam would hit the ROM contacts. If you were able to mount the lens on the body there is every chance you would damage both the camera and ROM contacts. It looks as if Leica saw the potential danger and found a simple mechanical solution. If you try to attach a ROM lens to the SL2, even though it won't fit you could still cause damage if you were persistent.
