To my mind the FM would take the gaff. But you're asking the wrong question.
You don't choose an M Leica because of its ruggedness. You choose it because
of its RF design and the type of photography that issues from that direct
approach.

I use my Nikon FM when I want to do some fixed position work, such as
close-up, use zoom lenses, or a studied landscape -- where I want to preview
DOF. When I do urban subjects, want to work fast, work unobtrusively, and wax
intuitive, I use an M Leica.
