I asked the same thing of a few Leica mavens and got two answers- One is
that they work on the camera, but the metering is non-exeistant in any mode-
hence, a handheld meter. The other story I got was that the metering works
in all but the aperture priority modes- spot and averaging... I'd try it on
my R-7, but drat it all- I had a third cam added to all my lenses, so I'll
have to lurk about for the definative answer  :)
