The initial work on retrofocus designs arose when Zeiss Ikon began toying with the production of an SLR version of the Contax, a project headed up by Hubert Nerwin in Dresden from 1937 onwards. This design necessitated retrofocus wide-angle designs, so Zeiss had Ernst Wandersleb and Hans Sauer work on what later became the Distagon/Flektagon design. Angenieux didn't begin playing with retrofocus designs until the mid-1950's, though they then made some wonderfully fine lenses.
