<<sigh>>  I am Such An Authority I believe my own delusions sometimes.  No,
it was '82, of course.  200 cameras were marketed to the general public at
the same time that the  expedition was in place on the massif.

It's interesting how this has linked Everest and Leica in the public's
mind, even though Everest has a rather thin link to the mountain.  I was
asked, years back, to participate in drafting a VF article on this and just
haven't gotten around to doing it, though I am doing some research on the
early North Face climbs.  Heady stuff, but all documented with Ross and
Wray and Zeiss glass.
