David, the requirement for circular polarizing filters goes all the way back
to the Leicaflex SL and has been required on all Leica reflexes since then.
I think it's because of the light passing through the mirror and reflected
downward to the photocell.  The Japanese have taken a similar approach for
their autofocus systems.
