Andrew,

I think to do it they would have to re-designe the Apo 180 completely.

Be easier for you to sell the 180 3.4 and get the 180 2.8 which is also a
great lens. The 1.4 works just fine with it. 

Then you could use both the 1.4 and the 2X at the same time with that lens.
