They're not!
I own both Leica R lenses (2/50, 2.8/35, 2.8/24, 2.8/80-200  and Nikon MF 
(1.8/50, 2/35, 2.8/20) the Leica lenses are definitely NOT better. I do mostly 
b/w and print them on a Focomat (most of them 30x40 cm, some 50 x 60 cm). I must
even say some of the Nikon lenses (e.g. 2.8/20) give better contrast and better 
tonal range than the L lenses. Of cause this is just 35mm format. If one wants 
really superior image quality 6x6 and up is the only to it.
