Geez, I wish I could stop defending Nikon, as I am a recent Leica R convert,
but let's get some logic in all of these comparisons Please! You're
comparing old generation lenses.

In a direct comparison I did a few months back, the current Nikon 60 macro
2.8 has color rendition as good as Leica R's, goes to 1:1 magnification
without extensions, handles very well, and is tack sharp from macro to
infinity. This was better than my experience with a Leica 60-R, E55,
particularly at focus beyond 1 meter.

By any measure, the 60 Nikon is a world class lens and is one reason why
Nikon continues to deserve their excellent reputation.

I've used the Macro Elmarit for years. I won't say it's as good as a 50mm
SummicronM at infinity but it's still outstanding. As you approach half
life size it produces some pretty amazing results. The only disadvantage
this lens has is that a longer focal length macro is generally more useful.
However, as a general purpose lens it's outstanding.

I've owned two versions of the 55mm Micro Nikkor and it's not even close to
the Leitz lens.

My impressions are based on projection of Kodachrome 25 transparencies.
