What is your source for this?  It is customary for Zeiss (and Leica) to
manufacture lenses in batches, so that one batch may be made in, say, 1993
and the next in 1998.  It is rare for a lens to be in production
continuously for years.

So, is it possible that what you have heard is that Zeiss has ceased
production between batches?  Or did you hear that the lens is being dropped
from their lens line for the G1/G2?
