Last year, we did stay at a convent in Amalfi. It was wonderful. Food great,
view of the bay was outstanding. I put the tabletop tripod on the balcony
rail with the 35-70 zoom and took some pictures of the quaint town hanging on
the steep cliffs at nighttime! The lights illuminating the two cathedrals
were simply eerie, their warmmm tan/brown color contrasting with the brighter
incandescents inside some of the homes. I believe that the cost was about
$100 that night. Our only nite stay under $100 was just north of Pisa, in the
town of Lucca.

I would highly recommend a night stay in Lucca, inside the walls of the
premedieval town. It has changed only minimally over the past 1000 years,
with only the addition of electric street lights spoiling the otherwise
perfect deep, dark street scenes (at nite) which would have been replicated
1000 years ago. The Noctilux was perfect! Tabletop tripod, held against a
wall, pointing down the lane, with the nightlit chathedral peeking around the
far distant corner. I'll gladly email a couple of examples to you if you
wish.

Susan and I do seek out places such as you recommended. We will find it our
next visit to Rome. Thanks for your kind suggestions!
