LUGnuts:

Journeyed to Orange County last evening to see "PhotoNight" presentation
by Maggie Steber (accompanied by one LUGger and one ex-lugger).

She showed work from her 1991 book Dancing on Fire: photographs from
Haiti, plus work from NG story on Miami and even some personal projects
in B/W. Mainly, she said, her projects grow out of personal work self
financed over years ("that's what credit cards are for"). She is now
represented by Saba Press in NY.

Her images, mostly Kodachome, just come alive on the projection screen.
Perhaps helped by Leica Lenses.

She uses Ms and Rs and has lenses from 19 to 350. Also has R8 and
winder and says it has become her favorite.

Maggie is a rarity: a true documentary photographer who is managing to
stay somewhat solvent and is finding forums for her work. On the other
hand, she did show one powerful story that was laid out and ready to go
at a magazine, but it never did run--echoing the recent story on
photojournalism.

Maggie is also an enthusiastic yet gentle soul with a deep passion for
her subjects and a humility about her work.

And next month, April 21, William Albert Allard.
