Given a choice, you will probably produce better portraits with the 75 or 90.
However, if you only have the 50, you'll find a way to be creative.  I have
taken some really nice portraits (head & shoulder) with the 50, sometimes
including the person's environment in the blurred or not-so-blurred
background.  Check out examples of HCB's famous portraits taken with the 50.
Stunning!  Although not your usual studio portrait!!  Good luck!
