I meant the last line somewhat as a joke.

The hood is rigid, and the the lens cap goes over the hood.  I have considered trying to put a filter between the hood and the body, but I can't figure out what size it is.

You can easily use any filter other than a polarizer, but it has to fit flush on the side so that it can retract with the front element.

Maybe you don't, but I sure do. This is the reason I will never buy this
lens. It is filter unfriendly. It boggles my mind that Leica would produce
a fine lens that is so filter unfriendly! It obviously is not meant for
serious photographers. Leica tourists I suppose. Happy snaps.
