If the unit will not flash when directly connected to the R8 it could be
defective. Of course it could be the R8 as well. Jeff Alford's suggestion
for checking the "spacer" is a good one. There is a small spacer supplied
with the 40MZ-3 which allows it to use SCA300 series adapters. If this is
left in place, the SCA3501 will not fully seat into the flash. The 3501
should be roughly flush with the back of the flash unit and it will lock
into place.

If it's not the spacer, you could try the flash with another camera (manual
mode if not an R8) to see if it fires. That should tell you if the
flash/adapter or camera is at fault. Alternatively, you could try another
flash with the R8. Does the open-flash/test button (green light) fire the
flash unit?

When the flash is attached to the R8 and powered on, the ready signal should
appear in the viewfinder. In addition, the shutter speed will automatically
be limited to a maximum of 250 (as indicated in the viewfinder display).

Hopefully, you just left the spacer in the flash. Then it's an easy fix;
just remove it and fully seat the 3501.

Good luck,
Vahan

Vahan: No, the Metz 40MZ-3 does not work attached directly to the
SCA3501...
