What people tend to forget is that the "high-end" merchandise is either
totally or mostly hand made. By HUMANS. Humans have bad days and good days.
Family members die, kids graduate with honors. This doesn't happen with
manufacturing robots.

All of this is absolutely true - but....One of the things that I believe we
pay for in high-end merchandise is enough QC and enough human care and
redundancy to eliminate the problems. Presumably near-perfection is one the
reasons that the differential in price of Leica equipment is so out of
proportion to the differential in its ability to take photos.
