I won't repeat the post, but agree with and
suggest that there are other places where
things are pursued for their own passions,
rather than for money, because nobody makes
any money.

Painting.  Lots of music.  Racing cars.  Racing
bikes.  Racing boats.  Some writing.  Most poetry,
I think.  

All of these are notable in that a few people get
famous and make a lot of money, but a lot of people
spend a lot of time/money/emotion, have an
intense and satisfying experience, but never
make a dime of profit.

Photography is in good company....
