Subject: [Leica] Cleaning a hazy Leitz Summar

I bought an old Leitz Summar. The price was low because it was hazy. I
took the front element off and cleaned it (easy). I took the rear lens
group off (also easy), leaving (I think) two elements in the barrel, which
are both clean.
The rear group has the haze inside it. As far as I can tell, the rear
group must have three elements in it - two cemented elements and the most
rearward element airspaced. The haze seems to be in that airspace.
Has anyone taken one of these apart? It looks like it may be possible
to screw out the most rearward element from the rest of the rear group. If
so, that would give me access to the hazy surfaces for cleaning.
Has anyone been in one of these? Does that last element screw off? (I
did try it. However, if it does come out it is very tight, and I don't yet
have a filter wrench to hold the lens group solid while turning the rear
element with the spanner.)
Thanks for any advice. Mark Walberg walberg@simmons.swmed.edu
