I am sure one of our list attorneys will correct me if I am wrong ;-)

The U.S. Customs Service has extraordinary powers of search and seizure. =
What U.S. citizens think of as constitutional rights basically do not =
exist when applied to the U.S. Customs Service. The burden of proof of =
where an item was purchased rests upon the person going through customs.

Typically, if you have items that may be questioned on your return to =
the U.S. it is very wise to fill out a declaration showing what you are =
taking (I can't remember the form number) and the serial numbers. Least =
this has been my experience. (The U.S. Customs are the only folks that =
ever dumped everything in my suitcases onto the floor, kicked it around, =
and left me to repack as people walked on the clothing).
