Eric-
One of the earliest was the Autochrome process, circa 1907 I believe, and
was the work of the Lumiere brothers. It used grains of potato starch, dye
and put on a glass plate with a panchromatic emulsion which was the key to
its success. I remember some examples in an old text book, "Elements of
Photography" by Neblette. darn! I loaned that book several years ago, and it
never came home!
