Hans:

Spin the knob on the top column until the scale reads the same thichness as
your easel. Then focus it and it should stay in focus as you go up and
down. It will probably not work over wide ranges like 4X5 to 16X20.
Although it is leica, do not expect perfection, and fine tune the focus if
in doubt. Mine works fine and stays in focus once I set the correct easel
height. The focus knob has a set screw that you tighten once it is focused
properly. This setting will differ between the slide carrier and the
negative carrier. BTW, the autofocus only works properly with the 40mm
Leica lens. If you didn't get the lens, the enlarger was not that great of
a deal.

On a cautious note, get a spare bulb now. Mine burnt out Sunday and is
unobtainable and requires a retrofit kit from Leica to use a newer style
bulb. The Phillips 6604 is the discontinued bulb and was replace with a
new mounting and a Phillips 13139. I was still able to make my Ilfochrome
prints, but had to use an old Vivitar colour head enlarger.

Robert Stevens
