In my practise I have used the first, third and fourth (current) versions (there was also a Leitz version for the CL, plus two Minolta versions). The 3rd and 4th generation 28's are everso close in performance, but the 4th version is more compact. The 28mm seems to be a love-it-or-hate-it focal length amongst photographers. Some find it a fitting compromise between 24 and 35mm, whilst those who disagree feel it is superfluous. My personal opinion is somewhere in-between. I do not own a 28mm for my reflex outfit, having always had a 24mm available. The Leica M series has only recently been graced with the addition of that focal length, and it requires a separate viewfinder--*additional* to the one I already carry (and despise) for the 21. I therefore welcome the 28mm, and it often replaces the 35 in my bag because I find it represents a distinctly wider view than the 50 whilst remaining free of the exaggerated perspective of a 21 or even 24.
