I just find a sharp nail and scratch the film info into the baseplate ;-).
Bur seriously, I normally don't keep the film in the camera long enough to
forget what was in it.  I just recently sold my chrome M6.  When I had it
and my Black M6, I would have slide film in one and B&W in the other.  The
chrome usually had the B&W.  If all else fails, just use a China Marker on
a piece of tape on the baseplate.
