I was always under the impression that Leicas, like fine watches,
required periodic cleaning and re-lubrication  because *even though they
may still be functioning perfectly*, grit and lack of lubrication are
causing undue wear on precision-fit mechanisms; the result of which would
be much more expensive repairs at some point.
