I go with the latter. Look at what my lens does. If it's what I want, I'm
happy. I buy lenses for what they can do - 35 Summilux over 35 Summicron
not because it is a tad bit better or worse, but because it's a 1.4 lens.
It's Leica, and I don't care if there's a lens that's a tiny bit better, if
it's a stop slower. A Summicron doesn't do anything at 1.4, so what good is
comparing them? 

It's fun. Not piratical. For you, I suspect that info would be relevant. Go
for it. But I suspect one really has to know a lot about optical
engineering to really get something significant out of MTF curves, and
you'd have to see a lot of curves to really understand a lens' performance.
 Not just one that someone shows. That's why I think for average
photographers, let guys like Erwin do testing, and let Leica read the
MTF's. I just shoot with the best glass I can afford.
