He gave up the R8 for the wrong reason. :-) You can use TTL flash in all modes except F - which is the flash meter mode. And if you want to "drag" the shutter (and this is in the manual I think) you just set second curtain flash sync. (which is on the body, so you can do it with even studio flash, unlike Nikon and Canon which put this function in the flash itself) and the camera will pick the appropriate shutter speed for the lighting conditions, rather than set the shutter speed at 1/250, when it's in auto modes. In manual, it works as you describe. I do believe other than matrix metering, I've never found a camera that can handle flash so well in so many different ways.
