For those of you having problems with adjustable diopters, try this.  Remove
the lens from the camera and point the camera to a bright light source while
looking through it.  Look at the focussing aids on the screen while moving the
diopter adjustment.  This can be the little focus brackets or boxes on the
Nikons, or the coarse microprism collar or the split image line of the
standard Leica focussing screens or the grid pattern on those screens with a
grid.  When these are as sharp as you can make them, the diopter should be set
correctly for your eye.  This method avoids competing with the image formed by
the lens being in or out of focus when you adjust the diopter.  Unfortunately,
it does not work well with a plain ground glass screen.
