When Carl Kellner opened his optical works in Wetzlar, he found himself
flooded with microscope orders. From time to time, one of the gentry would
come by in search of field glasses or small telescopes, and Kellner did not
wish to divert his small company's efforts to production of one-off items,
so he sent them around to a smaller optical shop run by his friend,
Hensoldt. Kellner died, and his works eventually became Leica; Hensoldt
died, and Zeiss eventually bought the company. All Zeiss binoculars save
for the most esoteric are now made at Wetzlar at the Hensoldt works.
