Could the Zeiss optic have also been better in terms of optical quallity?
At that time Zeiss was years ahead of others in terms of optical development
and quality control.  Perhaps that helped make the 50mm F1.5 Sonnar a
desirable lens.

Back then, films were slower, so almost a stop faster is going to be useful 
for the average street photographer.
