For M use, I picked up a Sunpak Softlite 1600A. Not much bigger than a pack of
smokes and the head even tilts. I rubber band a white index card on the unit,
tilt the flash head-no red eye. Has a thyristor, two auto ranges, and a full
manual setting. Rather potent for it's size, I pinch the aperture down a bit
from what the chart on the back of the unit recommends. I recall paying about
$29 a year or two ago.
