Paul,

one way to do it is to have the focus set always on infinity. Then, when
you bring up your camera to focus and compose, you will always turn the
focus lever in one direction, join the double image, recompose and shoot.
Other way is to always keep estimating the distance to your potential
subjects and keep scale pre-focusing, and when you are ready to shoot, you
can either fine tune the focus or just shoot. BTW, once you're good at the
distance estimation, you'll shoot really fast, provided that your exposure
estimation and pre-set is "on", :-).

So don't give up and practice, practice, practice...
