When enough flash absorbs into the sensor it cuts the flash off so the picture isn't too bright. This all happens in a millionth of a microsecond...give or take... In the TTL world the flash doesn't need to use it's tiny sensor mounted right on the front of it. It uses the one in your camera which is working along side your regular meter in your camera: behind the lens. This will make for a more accurate reading but you can live without it. I regularly do. The one on front of the flash itself works fine and can in some ways be easier to deal with. Mark Rabiner I used to get 5 or 6 not perfect exposures with regular A on the flash sensing per 36 roll. 1 or 2 with TTL. But the ones that were off were not off by much.
