Subject: [Leica] 90 APO origin and other trivia

This is realy a matter of highest triviality, but: the statement the more
sophisticated lens treatments are now transferred to Portugal is not
substantiated by any evidence I have.
The new APO 2/90 ASPH has been designed in Germany and is being mounted
in Germany. The aspherical lens is also made in Germany. The confusion
might be this. Originally the lens would have been assembled in Canada
because of lack of capacity in Solms. I assume that in this stage the boxes
have been ordered. Now the lens is made completely in Germany, but the
supply of the boxes with the Canada label on it may be used.
It is a quirk of the Leica community (its collectors approach that is) that
the box is such an important part of the lens system (pricewise that is)
that many people study the box for any clues of exclusiveness.
As Ted noted. the box is an unimportant item and referring to fraud is
nonsense. The engraving is important and the documentation that came with
the lens.

And as many commentators have noted: Portugal, Canada or Solms do not
matter at all. It is the Leica name that counts.
