Jim,

Question: "why does the dog lick his .........."
Answer: "because he can"

The same goes for Leica (range finder that is) Right from the early Leica
days, there where companies who made lenses to fit the Leica.
Some had larger apertures, some had different focal length and some where just
more affordable then the ones made from Leitz.
This also made the Leica system so popular. Just like the Pentax/Practika
system in the sixties. The possibility to find and use a foreign lens with
different characteristics to what Leica offers is a great advantage. Also the
reverse is possible. One could and still can use Leica lenses on foreign
bodies. (as long as they are screw mount).

Some people enjoy the idea of using less expensive lenses to get similar
results to the more expensive counter part from Leica.

Other just can't afford to just fork out 2000, or more Bucks, for a new lens,
while the kids at home have holes in their socks. But they still like to have
some fun with their hobby.
Not all of us are professionals.
