Paul:

All you really need to know about the V35 is to set the column height the
same as the thicness of your easel.  This is done by loosening the clamping
knob near the baseboard and turning the knob on the top of the column.
Once this is set, focus the negative or slide on the easel with a sheet of
paper in it, and it should stay in focus when you move it up and down.  If
it doesn't, play with the column height knob a little one way or the ohter
until the focus stays from  say a 5x7 to 16x20.
