A nice stream of conscience rant, there :-)

I have 5 lenses for my M6 (0.72 non TTL). 

21mm, Tri (28/35/50), Nocti 50, 90 F2.8 and the 135.

It is v hard to see what sort of shot, or situation, couldnt be covered by
them. The Tri is fab for general purpose "on holiday with happy snappy
camera" shot. The others are all like exquisite wines -- for tasting when in
the mood.
