Subject: [Leica] Tried one of B+W new multicoated filters

I just got one of the new multicoated B+W filters to replace the non
multicoated B+W filter on my Leitz Summicron 50mm f2 and the coatings
appear much like the SMC Hoya I have on my 20~35mm Canon L lens...you can't
even see the filter glass most of the time. Early photo results prove it is
a good filter in that it does not interfere with image quality. Very
impressive and nicely made.

Don't jump down my back or send me a personalized flame thrower, I am a
firm believer in UV protective filters as I am a newspaper guy and
relatively rough and tumble on the gear. I don't dent my gear, but in the
hustle and bustle I have scratched a few elements (and have paid for the
replacement thereof) in my 20 years of shooting.

I don't believe in using cheap filters and would rather use none if the only
thing available was a plain non coated tiffen (yuck!). But while there is
first quality stuff, I will use them. On my Nikons I use Nikon's L37c
filter which is most excellent. On my Leicas there are now BW multi coated
filters or late model Leitz filters.

I do shoot a lot of black and white for myself and of course that means a
nice set of colored filters for black and white. I like the yellow, orange
and red ones, which is really as much as most users of black and white film
would need. Although today, I get a few strange glances when I use them as
most people don't expect a colored filter on the end of a lens. Again the
best stuff rules.

Expensive filters are actually cheaper in the long run.
