The fat Tele-Elmarit was produced from 1964 to 1974, the skinny
Tele-Elmarit from 1974 to 1989.  Hence, you could not have purchased a
skinny Tele-Elmarit in the 1960's.

However, if you mean the fat Tele-Elmarit, it is generally conceded to
be
optically superior to the later, and much smaller, skinny version of the
lens.
