Well, you mix the D-76 formula with the Metol, sodium sulfite, and
hyroquinone in solution "A"; instead of adding the borax, you mix it
separately in solution "B".
Soaking the film in "A" loads the emulsion with the developing agent, and
after about 3 minutes, you drain, don't rinse, and then pour in "B"- the
borax 'activates' the developer, and you get negatives of pretty nice
contrast as the process is 'compensating'- the highlight areas exhaust the
developer more quickly, and the development slows- and the shadow areas keep
developing. You get your full speed, and fairly fine grain.
The temp is o not too critical- usually you can use it between 70-75 degrees
F, and you can't over develop or block your highlights!
I have used it for years- I would suggest that if you get some fog with your
film, add potassium iodide- in small, small quantities until the whites
clear, and no more than .5g/liter. With modern films, I usually don't add
any at all.
