I personally prefer the three-section 1227 to the four-section 1228.  The
former is substantially sturdier, though not quite as compact.  Still, 1227
attaches without problems to my pack.

Oh, I use a large Leitz ball head.  The combination is more than adequate
for my lightweight 4x5 as well.
