Nikon scanners at least match the quality of PhotoCD, assuming you're lucky
enough to get one that actually works.  (They work beautifully, when they work,
but they are often at the service center.)  The LS-2000 in particular is capable
of producing eye-popping scans.

The scanner can be amortized by the savings in not needing prints.  Also, I get
slides unmounted, which saves me an additional dollar or two per roll.
